The Joy of Small Daily Rituals: Homemade Pistachio Syrup for Lattes
It’s important to have at least one small thing to look forward to every day. And when I say small, I mean miniscule and mundane. Life is full of big exciting moments, trips and parties and holidays, and those are good to look forward but they don’t happen every day. We can’t live our lives in anticipation of the next big moment because then we’ll miss all the small ones. One of the small things I look forward to is my daily caffeinated beverage.
Lately, I’ve been trying to make more and more of my husband and I’s lattes at home and one of the ways I’ve been encouraging myself not to go to coffeeshops and spend $10 on a drink for myself is by making my own flavored coffee syrups.
At this point, I’ve experimented with brown sugar, vanilla, and now pistachio. Pistachio syrup has been my favorite by far. There are also tons of recipes for the other two on the Internet, but the particular pistachio syrup recipe I make is from a post on Reddit. I’ve read a few other blogs, and none of those recipes lived up to this one so I thought I’d share it here!
Ingredients for Pistachio Syrup Recipe:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup slightly salted pistachios without shells
- ½ tsp almond extract
- 1 tbsp pistachio butter (optional)
- Espresso shot
Instructions:
- Heat water and brown sugar over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves. Then reduce heat to low.
- Add in pistachios and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the syrup and mix in almond extract.
- Prepare your coffee (I like to use espresso), mix it with your milk of choice, and add the pistachio syrup to taste. For an extra kick, I like to add a little bit of pistachio butter to the bottom of the cup and around the edge of the glass.
This is truly my favorite caffeinated creation so far and I hope it adds some joy to your week, whether you’re hustling through the 9 to 5, taking care of littles, or hyping yourself up for your next task.
Verily,
