The Playlist Every Romantic Needs: 15 Lyrics That Will Speak to Your Soul

I have always loved music. From singing in the shower to jamming out on long car drives to finding the melody while my husband plays the guitar, music is one of the simple pleasures in my life. I love making different playlists for different seasons. Every summer, I create my “Verano Playlist” with all the tunes I plan to vibe with during the warm months. I have a fall playlist, a Christmas playlist, romantic playlists, sad playlists, introspective playlists, and even playlists for the book characters in the novel I’m working on. If a playlist can exist for it, I promise I’ve made it.

Why Your Music Taste Matters: It Speaks Volumes About You

I love learning about other people’s taste in music because I feel like the songs we listen to say so much about us. Whether we jam to pop music, Christian contemporary, or indie artists like Noah Kahan, our music is like our fashion—it’s how we present ourselves to the world. It’s how we show that we’re unique, or that we can conform. It’s how we show we’re deep or that we take things lightly.

There’s a famous quote about friends: “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” In a way, I think the same can be said about music. Show me your playlist, and I’ll show you what you care about.

Just like we should cultivate high-quality friendships, I believe we should also be intentional about our music choices. As much as I love a good beat, we absorb every song we listen to and so our music should have messages we’re okay internalizing. This is especially true when it comes to love songs.

The Romance in Music: Love Songs That Speak to the Soul

I have always been deeply romantic, both about relationships and life. In high school, I was frustrated by how superficial many popular love songs felt. While I can jam out to Ariana Grande’s “The Way” like the next girl, the message of “I love the way you make me feel” always felt a bit shallow to me. I longed for something more meaningful, more profound in a relationship.

When I met my husband in high school (more on that eventually), our relationship shaped so much of my taste in love songs. I used to make him mixtapes, and for our one-year marriage anniversary, I created a vinyl album filled with my favorite songs about unconditional love.

15 Unforgettable Love Songs with Lyrics That Capture Enduring Love

Below are lyrics from 15 of my favorite love songs. While not all of these songs are strictly about enduring love, the lyrics here encapsulate something I feel is necessary for a lasting relationship. The first was our first dance song, and the second was part of a choreographed dance at our wedding.

  1. “You are the only one to know me. You are the only one who saw. You are my one and only, the only one I ever learned to love.” — “Torch Song” by Priscilla Ahn
  2. “I don’t think you have to leave. If to change is what you need, you can change right next to me.” — “Grow as We Go” by Ben Platt
  3. “This mess was yours. Now your mess is mine.” — “Mess Is Mine” by Vance Joy
  4. “When you think you’re all alone, I’ll wrap you up and I’ll take you home. No matter what you’re going through, I will look after you.” — “Look After You” by Aron Wright
  5. “I am the swelling sea. You’re the moon pulling on me.” — “Swelling Sea” by Tow’rs
  6. “From the furthest place I look back and say ‘I belong with you.'” —  “North and South” by Hey Marseilles
  7. “That’s the way we are, everywhere we are.” —  “New Mexico” by Socks and Chimes
  8. “And you don’t hold back so I won’t hold back. And you don’t look back so I won’t look back.” — “Light Me Up” by Ingrid Michaelson
  9. “Although I don’t have much, with pride everything I have is yours.” — [Translated from Spanish to English] “Vida de Rico” by Camino
  10. “No more loathing fear. The doubt has disappeared.” —  “Porcelain Skin” by Captain Dipper & The Strawberry Girl
  11. “Honey, when you feel worn out, when the mirror lies and turns on you, when the choruses of doubt are singing way too loud, honey, I will chase them down.” —  “Honey” by Mindy Gledhill
  12. “Isn’t it obvious? You were right in front of me with the answer.” — “Obvious” by CHPTRS
  13. “And I come to find a refuge in the easy silence that you make for me.” —  “Easy Silence” by The Dixie Chicks
  14. “Even though you’re crazy, you will never be a bother.” —  “The Hunter” by Red Hot Chili Peppers
  15. “At last, bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh, at last.” — “Like the Dawn” by The Oh Hellos

I’m sure you can see a few common themes as you read through these. So many of these lyrics are about certainty, being fully seen, and being met exactly where you are. These have been fundamental elements in my own relationship over the years.

I hope these songs help you reflect on your own love story or inspire you to think about the person you one day hope to meet.

Verily,

Kyrie
